January 7, 2012

PROGRAM

10:00 AM Introductory Remarks: St.John Chrysostom Society Presentation on the Eastern and Western churches traditions surrounding the Feast of the Nativity-Theophany. Questions to be held until the end of the presentation and written down.

10:15 AM Prayer Service: Opening Prayer (Fr. Cávana Wallace, Pastor of St. Margaret’s)

10:30 AM Presentation: Christmas customs in both Eastern & Western Christian churches;

Presenters: Fr. Cávana Wallace (West), Rt. Rev. James Babcock (East), Moderator: V. Rev. Fr. George Morelli;

(Attendance 35-45).

BUSINESS MEETING

Present: Officers: Pres: V. Rev. Archpriest George Morelli, V.P.: Rt. Rev. Archimandrite James Babcock; Secretary: Anne Petach, Excused; Treas.: Bob Greenwell, Parliamentarian: Frank Scialdone; Fr. Cávana Wallace; Msgr. Dennis Mikulanis; Members: Diane Alves; Assc. Member: Pastor Paul Bieber; Sec’y Pro-Tem: Marian Cavadias (pending member).

At 12:15 PM, after Presentation in St. Margaret Parish Hall. Msgr. Mikulanis offered opening prayer.

President’s Report: – Fr. George motioned to approve agenda. The agenda was circulated and approved by consensus as presented. Thanked Fr. Cavana Wallace for his presentation and St. Margaret’s Parish for hosting us. Discussed having a future meeting at St. Marina Coptic Church. The last general meeting was held at St. Paul’s Greek Orthodox Church. In the future SSJC-WR will concentrate on meeting locations in San Diego and Orange counties. Next Light of the East Conference plan is delayed due to death in the family of Fr. Steve.

Parliamentarian: Vote to approve installation of new Vice President Fr. Ramon Merlos approved by unanimous vote. Appointment of Secretary Pro-Tem: Marian Cavadias, approved unanimously.

Secretary’s Report – (Anne Petach, Excused due to illness). Motion made to approve minutes of the last meeting by Frank. Seconded: Bob. Accepted unanimously. Minutes are to be posted on the website www.lightoftheeast.org.

Newsletter Report – Fr. James discussed his new responsibilities as editor of newsletter for his Diocese. This will reduce the time he has available to write the newsletter for SSJC-WR, but he will continue to write our newsletter as long as he is able.

Treasurer’s Report – (Bob Greenwell) The Treasurer’s Report was circulated and approved by consensus as presented.

Chaplain’s Report – (Fr. Cávana Wallace; Msgr. Dennis Mikulanis) Prayer service to be held on June 18, 2012 at 7:00 PM at St. Bartholomew Episcopal Church in Poway (for Anglican Roman Catholic dialogue and Ecumenical Movement).

The Pope has appointed Bishop Cirilo Flores to be Coadjutor Bishop of San Diego. Bishop Flores will be formally received in the Diocese of San Diego on Monday, Feb. 13. at St. Therese of Carmel in Carmel Valley, San Diego, CA.

Web Page Update – (Diane Alves) Minutes from last meeting have not been received, but will be posted as soon as Anne can email them to Diane.

OLD BUSINESS

Programs for 2012:

Feb 25th, 2012: Lent in East and West: need to determine place of the next meeting, either it will be held at St George’s Serbian Orthodox Church, Denver St., San Diego (Claremont area) or at St. Constantine & Helen in Cardiff. TBA

March 24, 2012: Light of the East Conference, Irvine. Working Topic” Forgiveness: The Path To Reconciliation. To Be Confirmed.

May 1, 2012: Praise of the Mother of God: In Eastern and Western Traditions. Location: Ukranian Catholic Church in La Mesa (Fr. James Bankston). To Be Confirmed.

Announcements: The 2012 Huffington Ecumenical Symposium: “Pan-Orthodoxy” March 16-17, 2012 at Loyola Marymount Univ., Los Angeles,CA. No further information available.

NEW BUSINESS

Feb 25th Meeting location to be determined. Fr. George will confirm possible location at St Constantine and Helena in Cardiff. Msgr. Dennis will obtain a Catholic Speaker.

Feb 25th, 2012 Light of the East conference is not yet confirmed as the keynote speaker (Fr. Steve) may not be available. It may be necessary to postpone the date, or change the venue of the conference. Different possible venues were discussed. To be confirmed as soon as possible.

No other motions from the floor, the motion to adjourn was made by Frank Scialdone. The meeting closed with a prayer by Pastor Paul.
